Muller Down Los Blancos

On this day in European football history, 14 April 1976, Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid 2-0 in the first leg of their European Cup semi-final tie. Two goals from legendary striker Gerd Muller gave the Bavarian giants a commanding advantage heading into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Bayern Munich head coach Dettmar Cramer was delighted with his team's performance. "We played very well today," he said. "We were very compact and disciplined, and we created a lot of chances. We could have won by more goals, but we are happy with the result."

Real Madrid coach Miguel Munoz was disappointed with his team's performance, but he remained confident that they could turn things around in the second leg. "We didn't play well today," he said. "We made too many mistakes, and we didn't create enough chances. But we are still in the tie, and we will fight to win the second leg."

The second leg of the semi-final tie was played at the Santiago Bernabeu on 28 April 1976. Real Madrid won the match 1-0, but it was not enough to overturn the 2-0 deficit from the first leg. Bayern Munich advanced to the final, where they defeated Saint-Etienne to win their third European Cup title.
