On Thursday, June 16th, 2022, Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes was named the 2022 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year. The 20-year-old guard-forward averaged 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game during the 2021-22 regular season, leading the Raptors in all three categories

Barnes was selected by the Raptors with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He quickly became a key contributor to the team, averaging 9.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game as a rookie. In the 2021-22 season, Barnes took a major step forward, emerging as one of the most promising young players in the NBA. He was a consistent double-double threat, and his all-around game helped the Raptors to a 48-34 record and the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. In the playoffs, Barnes averaged 16.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, helping the Raptors to a 4-3 series loss to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round.

Barnes's Rookie of the Year Award is the first major individual honor of his young career. He is the second Raptors player to win the award, joining Vince Carter, who won in 1999. Barnes is also the first Canadian player to win the award since Anthony Bennett in 2014.
