Algerian Boxer Khelif Wins Opening Bout at Paris Olympics

Transgender Boxer Faces Scrutiny

WEB Khelif, one of Algeria's first three female boxers sent to Tokyo three years ago, won her opening bout at the Paris Olympics on Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy quit after just 46 seconds.

Khelif, born on May 2, 1999, is an Algerian boxer who has been competing since 2018. As with previous Olympic boxing competitions, a female boxer whose gender identity has recently been questioned won her first fight at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.

Khelif entered Paris with a 9-5 career professional record, with notable losses to two Irish boxers, Kellie Harrington in the 2021 Olympics and Carly McNaul in a 2022 bout.
