Japan Earthquake Kills Multiple, Triggers Tsunami Warning

West Coast Struck by Massive 7.5 Quake

Tsunami Watch in Effect for Southern Japan

A devastating earthquake has struck the west coast of Japan, killing multiple people and triggering tsunami warnings for southern Japan, according to local authorities. The magnitude 7.5 quake struck at 16:10 JST on Monday and was centered off the Noto Peninsula, north of Suzu. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami warning for the southern Japanese islands of Kii, Tokai, and Shikoku, as well as the Amami Islands and Tokara Islands.

The powerful quake sent buildings swaying in Tokyo and other major cities. The JMA has issued a warning for strong aftershocks, with the potential for additional damage and injuries. Emergency responders are on high alert and have been dispatched to the affected areas to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.

The full extent of the damage and casualties from the earthquake is still being assessed. However, early reports indicate that multiple buildings have collapsed and there are widespread power outages. The Japan Coast Guard has issued a separate warning for possible tsunami waves of up to one meter (3 feet) to hit the coast of Niigata, Ishikawa, and Toyama prefectures.
